HUNDREDS of visitors, dozens of success stories and two big events …

This equals one great birthday celebration, NMMU’s Madibaz Day.

An exhibition capturing the university’s first 10 years followed by a concert celebrating those successes was exceptionally well received by the students and staff who attended the Monday 11 May event.

Both academic and support services staff displayed their many successes during Nelson Mandela’s Metropolitan University’s first decade via posters, newspaper clipping, timelines, PowerPoints, awards, certificates and even via quizzes, games and a theatrical show at the expo.

Madibaz Radio provided a musical backdrop as visitors strolled through the NMMU Indoor Sports Centre getting a better insight to the great advances that have been made by the University since it was established in 2005 (see individual stories of some of these successes).

Prizes were awarded for the best stalls (see below), before the action moved to the adjacent NMMU Sports Centre for the concert starting at 3pm.

There staff and students gathered on the stand and field with their blankets and picnic baskets to enjoy a concert by the university’s most talented artists (see adjacent story) in perfect weather.

The concert was opened by NMMU’s internationally award-winning choir and followed by the Vice-Chancellor’s welcome. Prof Derrick Swartz casually dressed like his staff in a NMMU 10-year T-shirt, inspired staff and students about the great potential of the university in the years to come.

He shared his hopes for two new campuses – hosting a medical faculty and also a marine and maritime faculty.
